The Iowa Legislature is now in session. Joe Kelly is the lobbyist for Landlords of Iowa and provides regular updates from Des Moines. Here is the latest from Kelly:
Two bills important to landlords have been up for debate recently:
HF 493, the “Right to Assistance” bill, ensures that an owner, lessee or lessor of a property in need of law enforcement assistance or other emergency assistance in the State of Iowa is not penalized for those authorities being contacted.
HF 161, the occupancy bill, now has a subcommittee: Senator Steve Sodders, subcommittee chair; Senator Wally Horn, and Senator Charles Schneider. No subcommittee meeting has been scheduled as of yet. HF 161 has to emerge from the Senate Judiciary Committee by next Thursday, March 26.
Kelly recommends contacting House members to support HF 493, and Senators to support HF 161.
