News from the Iowa Legislature

The Iowa Legislature is now in session, and Joe Kelly, Landlords of Iowa lobbyist, will be providing regular updates on issues important to landlords.

House File 161: The Occupancy Bill is back in the Legislature this year and is now House File 161. This bill is familiar to many landlords. HF 161 proposes that cities shall not, after January 1, 2016, adopt or enforce any regulation or restriction related to the occupancy of residential rental property that is based upon the existence of familial or nonfamilial relationships between the occupants of such rental property.

Senate File 184: This bill proposes that the limit on small claims be raised from $5,000 to $10,000.
